Châtenois, ideally situated on the Route des Vins, is a fortified town with a unique charm. Two fortified walls surround the town, dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. The ramparts are showcased every year during the traditional "Fête des Remparts" in June.
These sites are listed as Historic Monuments, thanks in particular to the Tour des Sorcières, a 15th-century Gothic gateway located on the second wall, and the 18th-century church of St. Georges. Push open the door of the latter to discover one of Silbermann?s masterpieces.
From the church, stroll along the interpretation trail along the ramparts, then descend to the heart of the village. Lose yourself in the narrow streets and admire the typical Alsatian houses, where geraniums bloom on the balconies every summer.
You can also explore the local cycle paths during the annual slow Up in June, or hike through the vineyards, along the GR5 trail or on the Chemin de Compostelle.
Round off your walk with a visit to one of the local wine cellars, and stop off at one of the town?s fine restaurants offering a variety of local specialties, such as tarte flambée.
