It is a stone's throw from the old Panier district, the Vieille Charité and several historical monuments including the Maison Diamantée, the Hôtel de Cabre - the oldest residence in the city - the Hôtel-Dieu, the Musée des Docks Romains and the Tourette complex, the work of contemporary architect François Pouillon.
As the City of Marseille needed a new, more modern and more functional council chamber, and following several unsuccessful projects, it was finally the architect Franck Hammoutène who, in 2005, designed the Espace Villeneuve Bargemon and built it under the square of the same name. This creation, recognized as emblematic of his style, which is at once spare, subtle and refined, earned him the national architecture prize: the Equerre d'Argent 2006.
Under the surface, in addition to a hemicycle equipped with the latest technology, the other modular spaces can be used to present temporary exhibitions to the general public, as well as to host receptions (cocktails, breakfasts) or work meetings.
