Mussig, a rural village in the Ried region, is less than 10 km from Sélestat.
Some 500m west of the village, on the meadows bordering the Ill forest, stands a large group of tumulus, earthen mounds covering one or more tombs.
With a total of 37 tumuli, Mussig is part of a vast necropolis zone in Central Alsace.
The most remarkable mounds occupy a bucolic spot to the north of the road, between the Ill dyke and a narrow alder-lined stream, the Brücklisgraben. Here, you'll discover circular mounds varying in height from 0.30m to 1.80m and diameter from 10m to 30m. Unusual traces of the Iron Age.
These tumuli are the only remains of Celtic civilization and, as such, their preservation is essential to our understanding of this period.
They were classified as historic monuments by ministerial decree on March 3, 1989.
Its historical heritage also includes the Saint-Oswald church and the graves of the 7 Commonwealth soldiers who fell in Alsace.
In the commune, stop off at one of the farms to taste Tomme du Ried. This cheese, made from Ried cow's milk, has a unique taste thanks to the local herbs grazed by the animals. The production of this Tomme helps to preserve and develop the flood plains of the Ried region.
If you're an enthusiast, take part in our annual nocturnal gourmet walk. You'll discover the particularities of the Ried and the hidden landscapes of this beautiful village. The 8.3 km route is punctuated by tasty stops featuring local specialities.
Another not-to-be-missed event in Mussig is the Celery Festival. This biannual event brings the village to life over a weekend with a re-enactment of an old-fashioned farm, a ball, tarts flambées, celery sales?
