What child wouldn't dream of being Peter, who defies fear and his grandfather's warnings to capture the wolf that has been spreading terror? The cruel animal ends up in the zoo, at the end of Prokofiev's enduring tale, in which each character is embodied by a different instrument. This same zoo gives its title to Luciano Berio's facetious wind quintet, which in 2025 would have celebrated its centenary. Among the residents are farm animals dancing a frenzied farandole, a melancholy fawn, cackling mice... as well as tomcats, perhaps including Pierre's elegant and mysterious cat. Who's to say?
