Founded in the Middle Ages, the village was first under the aegis of the Château du Hohnack, then of the Abbey of Pairis. First mentioned in 1049 as Orbeiz.
Nestled in a vast green valley at the foot of the Black and White Lakes and the great Vosges ridge, the commune is a veritable natural treasure trove. The famous Battle of the Linge, on the Vosges Front, was the scene of bitter fighting in 1915 during the First World War. Come and discover the trenches of German and French soldiers at the Linge Memorial, between April and November 11 (the symbolic date of this conflict).
