At the foot of the Vosges mountains, between meadows and forests, lies the village of Birkenwald, with 214 inhabitants at last count. Nestled in the valley formed by the Sommerau stream, the village is a pleasant, peaceful place to recharge your batteries. The 16th-century château (privately owned), the Saint-Louis church, the 1758 mission cross and the Notre-Dame chapel (1751) are all worth a visit.
