A small village of 270 inhabitants, Crastatt is located not far from Wasselonne, at the foot of the Durenberg mountain range. The village dates back to the Middle Ages, and its name is mentioned several times in the possessions of the abbeys of Wissembourg in the 8th century, Marmoutier in the 12th century and Obersteigen in the 13th century. It was disputed between the Holy Roman Empire and the bishopric of Strasbourg, and finally came into the possession of the bishop of Strasbourg from the 14th century until the French Revolution.
In 1914, a Merovingian necropolis containing seven 7th-century tombs was discovered at Ritterpfad. This proves that Crastatt has been inhabited since this period. The Crastatt church is located in the center of the village and is dedicated to Saint Augustine. The oldest parts of the church date from the 13th century, and the most recent from the 19th century.
